Ok here it is part 4.( IF YOU ARE NEW TO THIS BLOG AND THIS STORY, PLEASE ACQUAINT YOURSELF TO THE SHORT STORIES CATEGORY). I know i call it short stories, but they some how end up being so long. Sorry i took so long to post part 4.
It was Friday evening, Ade had left the office early, he had promised Fola that he would reduce his working hours and he would start taking things slow. Recently he hadn’t been sleeping and he was always feeling exhausted by the end of the day. Himself and Fola had just finished dinner and were sitting in the living room chatting.
“Ade it’s my birthday in 2weeks and I am still not sure if I want to have a party or not.” Fola said.
“That is weird; you always throw a party for your birthday, why don’t you want a party this year”. Ade asked surprised. “I just want to hang out with friends on that day; I don’t want a party or get together. If there is a party Gwen will come and as my Brother you are also going to be there and I know how awkward it would be for the both of you, and I don’t want any tension at my party”. So it will be much better if I just don’t have a party”. Fola said
Ade looked at his younger sister amazed at her maturity and thoughtfulness; she always put people’s feelings before hers. “My beautiful thoughtful little sister, don’t let Gwen and I’s issues disturb your plans. I am going to make sure you have the best birthday party that you have had. Invite whoever you want, and start making plans for your party. Give me a list of whatever you want done, I will pay for the expenses, don’t bother mum about it
“Oh Ade, Are you sure you will pay for everything no matter the cost”? Dad always says I spend too much. “Yes I will” Ade replied. . “Thank you Ade you are the best brother in the whole world”. Fola said and hugged him.“Ade there is another thing; I don’t want you and Gwen to avoid each other at my party. Promise me that you won’t avoid her.
“I promise. Fola I have never understood your attachment to Gwen .I had other girlfriends in the past and you were never this close to any of them. Take Tola for example you have never liked Tola. Why is this?” “Ade asked
Tola is just too……. I am looking for the word: “loud? Ade supplied, “no not loud, superficial, she is not real. All your previous girlfriends were like that too. Gwen is very down to earth, I guess it’s because of her upbringing, and apart from that I love her. I see her as the older sister I never had”. I told her as much when I saw her on Monday.
“You saw her on Monday? Where? Ade asked surprised, he didn’t know Fola and Gwen still hung out. He had thought the last time Fola had seen Gwen was when she first got back into the country when Fola had given Gwen his phone number. “Fola what have you been up to?”
“I have been up to anything. You do not like me talking about Gwen. This is the first time we are talking about her in years. You always change the topic anytime her name is mentioned. Anyway I go to her office very once in a while and I also visit her at her house. I was at her office on Monday. We even talked about you”. Fola said.
At this time, her face had taken on a serious look. Ade noticed this and asked “you guys talked about me? What did Gwen say about me?”
“I don’t think I should tell you” Fola replied “Come on Fola I know you want to tell me, you don’t hide things from me. What did she say about me?”
“Well I did most of the talking, but its concerns you”……… I don’t know if it would be right if I was the one that told you this, it’s kind of a serious matter. Fola said.
“Fola I didn’t force you to tell me anything in the first place, but since you don’t want tell me I won’t force you to. I am sure what you guys talked us working together. But don’t keep secrets from me. Do we have a deal?
“Deal”. Fola replied staring at the ground.
“Good. I am going upstairs. By the way Maria called me. She is coming in tomorrow, she said she had been trying to call you all day to tell you she changed her mind and was coming in a day early .She wants you to meet her at the airport. Call her”.
“Ok. Ade there is something I need to tell you. She was silent for a moment and continued “Gwen was never pregnant. Tola and mum also made up a story that Tola was pregnant for you back then .Tola showed Gwen the doctor’s report that she was 4months pregnant so you and Gwen could breakup.
“What are you talking about? Of course Gwen was pregnant, it was in the papers. She and Joe got engaged and Tola was never pregnant for me. Where are getting your stories from? Ade said
“Ade you need to listen to me, I know what I am talking about. Gwen broke up with because Tola told her she was pregnant for you. Gwen was never pregnant and she was never engaged. You guys broke up for no reason.
“Fola are you sure all you are saying is true? This is a serious issue. How do you know all this?
I overhead mum and Tola talking about it. I told Gwen about it on Monday. She said.
You did what?!Why did you do that? How can you tell her before telling me? What were you thinking??? Ade was shouting at the top of his voice.
“I am sorry Ade; I didn’t do it to offend you I just wanted to help. I know you and Gwen still love each other. I want you guys to get back together. What mum and Tola did was bad, and I am sure mum regret doing it now because she knows you are not happy.………… You haven’t been in a long time, and you know I am right.”
I know you mean well Fola, but you should have told me first. Right now I don’t know how to process all this information. I am so surprised and annoyed that our mother could do such a thing. and she didn’t say anything. What do I do now? I can’t deal with this right now. I am going upstairs and I don’t want to be disturbed”. He got up and started to leave the living room.
“Ade I am sorry about everything.” Fola said. Without stopping or looking back he replied “what is done is done, there is nothing to be sorry about”.
Maria was back. She and Fola were in Fola’s bedroom in Ade’s house going through Magazines. “I have the exact same shoes this model is wearing.” Maria said.
Did you just get it? Fola asked. “Yes, I bought it in London. Which reminds me, when I was in London I saw Tola having lunch with a guy. He looked like her ex. Do remember the actor she dated a while back? He looked like him. I am not sure because I couldn’t see his face. I was leaving the restaurant when I saw them and I didn’t go over to their table to say hello because I didn’t want Tola to see me.
“They looked like a couple. I had this feeling like she was cheating on Ade with the guy but that would be strange, even funny. She loves Ade.
“Loves? She is obsessed with my brother. She only has eyes for him. Fortunately for me, he doesn’t feel the same way. I don’t think she would she cheat on Ade. Although it could happen; and it would be great if she transferred her obsession to someone else.
Maria chuckled. “So how has Ade been handling what you told him about the whole him, Gwen and Tola situation?
“He hasn’t talked about it again. You know Ade he doesn’t talk about anything concerning Gwen. I feel its pride and regret that is stopping him saying anything. As much as I would like him and Gwen to get back together; I think I will just stay out of their issue. Fola said.
I agree, don’t get involved anymore. Let them work things out for themselves .If they are meant to be together they will find a way to be together. Maria said.
Fola looked at Maria closely and said, “When did you suddenly become a love guru? That was the last thing that I expected to hear from you. When it comes to love and romance you are usually very cynical. What happened to you in London?
Maria started to blush. “Oh my GOD! Maria for real, are you blushing? Fola said
Fola I met a guy in London, I think I am in love. I know it’s too early for me to be saying that, but I have never felt like this before.
“Wow, Hell just officially froze over. Who is this person in my cousin’s body? I can’t believe this. Maria is in love. I wish you can see the expression on your face right now. So tell me more. Who is he? Where is he from? I hope he is Nigerian? Is he hot? When do I get to meet him? But wait a minute; weren’t you going to tell me about this at all?
“I was, but I didn’t want you to tease me the way you are teasing me right now. And yes he is Nigerian and yes he is hot. You will meet him at your birthday party, I invited him.”
“It’s weird the way you are acting right now. I have never seen you like this. I think I like this new you. You are so beautiful inside and out and over the years different guys have tried to win your affection but I have never seen you show any interest in romance until today. Fola said.
“I know, I have always said I am content being single and I have always thought that I will be one of those career women whose career is their whole life. Well I guess I changed my mind. Fola I really think I am in love, because there is no other explanation for what I am feeling. Maria said.
“Love is a beautiful thing and I can see you are so happy and I am happy that you are happy.” Fola said
“I am glad I have finally told you. Ok enough about me, what are we doing for your birthday? Have you gotten an event planner yet? How much did your dad set as the limit? We need to convince him to go all out for your 21st.
Well the good news is Ade is paying for everything and he said I could spend as much as like. I am so excited. Fola replied.
That is really good news. Let’s call Adaobi Noah. She was the event planner that handled Ethel’s wedding. Remember how impressed we were by her work, she is the one we should call for your birthday.
“I agree. I think you should call Ethel and try to get Adaobi’s number. They chatted on about ideas and plans for the party.
Gwen had just arrived at Fola’s Birthday party venue. Fola had booked ECLECTIC for her party. It was a club and also a lounge. She had Fola’s gift in her hands and was looking around for the celebrant. The music was so loud; there were more people at the party than Gwen expected to see. Fola had told her it was only going to be friends and family. Gwen went upstairs to the V.I.P section where she saw Fola sitting down with some other people, in a corner. When Fola saw she got up and rushed to me her and gave her a big hug. “Happy birthday darling, here this is for you” Gwen said and she gave Fola her present.
“Thank you”. Fola replied “Come let me introduce you to my friends”. She took Gwen by the hand and took her closer to where the others were sitting and introduced her to everyone sitting there and they sat down trying to catch up. “So tell me, how does it feel to turn 21?”Gwen asked “you know what’s funny Gwen is that I feel older than 21”. Fola replied. “But I am glad I am officially now an Adult.”
“I guess you feel older than 21 because you have always been around Adults and most of your friends are older than you. You are actually quite mature for your age so it’s normal you feel this way.
“Yeah you are right. I didn’t think about it that way”. Fola admitted “it makes more sense to me now”
I didn’t expect to see so many people hereGwen said, I thought you said it was only friends and family
Fola laughed “Gwen this are friends and family. I know a lot of people and majority of the people here though are my course mates from school”.
Gwen saw her friend Dayo on the other side of the room, talking with two other people, she turned to Fola “I just saw Dayo, let me go and say hello”
She stood up to go meet her friend. On her way to meet Dayo, she ran into Ade. It wasn’t like she didn’t know he would be there, after all it was his sister’s party, but she had wanted to avoid him throughout her stay at the party. It looked like fate was not on her side. “Hello Ade”
Hi Gwen, so you came? We need to talk. We have a lot to discuss. Ade said.
Gwen replied him “First, Fola is like a sister to me, of course I would come for her birthday party. Secondly this is not the time or the place for us to talk. If you have something you want to talk about, you can reach me at my office. With that said, she started to walk away”
Ade grabbed her arm and pulled her back “I am not done speaking to you”. I said we need to talk now. I know you won’t allow me to see me to see you in the office, now is the perfect time for us to talk.
He looked around them, let go of her arm and said “look, let us not have an argument here and cause a scene. Let’s go somewhere and talk”.
Ok, Gwen finally answered. What was so important that he wanted to talk about? She thought to herself.
Ade took her to a reserved area and they both sat down. Gwen crossed her legs and was fiddling with the hem of her dress, waiting for Ade to start talking. So time passed and he still did not say anything “I thought you had something you wanted to talk about? Gwen said
Ade didn’t reply immediately, it seemed he was having some difficulty saying what he wanted to say.
Ade I didn’t want to ……… Gwen had started saying before Ade cut her off and said “Tola and I broke up”
What Ade said came as a surprise to her and at the same time deep down she felt a happy to her this ,but she said “sorry to hear about that, but aren’t you guys engaged or something, and by the way, how is this any of my business? Gwen said
“I found out some things. I found out what Fola and my mother did to us. I know what really happened Gwen; Fola told me everything. Ade replied
There was complete silence for a moment then Ade continued. “Why didn’t you tell me when you found out he truth, do you know what I went through because of this whole issue. I went through hell…. I thought the worst of you.
Ade, I remember telling you I was innocent when you accused of some certain things. Yes I found out the whole truth when Fola told me but how did you want me to tell you? What did you want me to say? For crying out loud, you were engaged to someone else!
Yes I was engaged; engaged to the wrong person! But didn’t you think you should tell me. All my pain was for nothing. Don’t you see? We were forced to break up. It was all a calculated plan by my Mother and Tola. He paused for a moment and said “What’s sad is that I still love you”.
“You love me”? Did you just say you love me, Ade?” Gwen asked surprised,
“Yes you heard right, I still love you, but you destroyed me the last time. As much as I want you back, I don’t know if we would work because of all that has happened”. Ade said
Gwen took this as the sign to try to salvage whatever was left of their lost love “Ade I love you too, I never stopped loving you too. I know all that what happened in the past was mostly my fault, all because I didn’t trust you and I easily believed Tola. I take full responsibility for my actions, please forgive and give me another chance. Please I am begging you” Gwen pleaded, with tears in her eyes.
Ade pulled Gwen into his arms, “Sweetheart don’t cry. I never thought I would see the day that you will be so humble, if this situation wasn’t so serious I might actually start laughing. Look, I love you; thank GOD you also love me back, I never really got over you. I love you so much” He wiped the tears from her eyes, and gazed lovingly at her.
Gwen put her hands around his neck and said “I love you Ade, I love you much more than you know, and she started crying.
“My love, what’s the matter? Why are you crying? Ade asked
“My love this are tears of Joy, I am just so happy” Gwen said smiling, at the same time with tears pouring down her face.
“I am happy too”, and with that he kissed her.
WATCH OUT FOR THE FINAL PART OF THE STORY
I am sorry guys that it took me so long to post the part 3, but i hope you like this. Enjoy!
“Gwen I have been looking all over for you”! One of the guests worked into the living room. She was the wife of one of frank’s business partners called Daniel; Dayo had introduced her to the lady and her husband some minutes before, her name was Samantha. “I came in to get some iced water” Gwen said. “Samantha, this Ade, he is also a friend of Dayo and Frank, he just got here”. Samantha and Ade exchanged pleasantries and she turned back to Gwen and said “As I was saying, I have been searching for you, we are about to serve the food. I have saved a seat for you by my side, we need to discuss more about your ideas for the decor of my house, I absolutely love your ideas” she chatted on unaware of tension in the room. “Gwen let’s go outside Daniel is waiting for me” Samantha said. “You can go on, I will join you in a minute’’ Gwen replied.
As soon as Samantha left Gwen said “I did not know you are also a liar apart from being a cheat. You stand your and deny your own child??? I saw the test results. You can’t deceive me. I can’t believe what my ears are hearing!!! She stormed out of the living room. Ade still confused didn’t know when he stood up and went after her, “Gwen wait”! He reached her and grabbed her arm. As soon as he did he realized it was a mistake, Gwen froze, if looks could kill the look she gave him would have killed him there and then “don’t ever touch me again’’. She walked away, back to the guests and started chatting with the guests like she had never left them. Ade watched from where he stood, turned and left the house.
The time was 8:00 pm, Gwen was in her car on her way home after the barbeque, her driver had decided to take another route home which turned out to be a bad idea because the route had led them a dead end and they had to turn back. Now they were stuck in traffic. Her driver switched on the radio, he was going through channels, and Gwen started reflecting on the events of the day. The barbeque had been fun, it was always nice to hang out with friends; the only dark part of the day was when she saw Ade had their argument. He was such a liar, if only he owned up to his mistake. Why did guys….. Her thoughts were interrupted by the song that just came on. It was Nick lachey ‘this I swear ’’. “Switched off that radio” she screamed at her driver ,the driver was surprised because she rarely ever raised her voice ,in his confusion he almost hit the car ahead of them “yes madam’’. “Are you trying to kill us” Gwen continued screaming at him “yes…no madam”. “Shut up and just drive’’ she told him. The driver had a look that had a combination of surprise and fear on his face; she found it so funny she almost started laughing. The song had just rattled her; she had not heard it in years. It was her and Ade song. No it had been her and Ade song she mentally corrected himself. It had been the song playing when he proposed to her all those years ago. Ade said the song represented everything he felt and would do for her. She had believed him…. GOD she had. All of a sudden memories came rushing back and she felt so sad she wanted to cry. She held back the tears and stared outside her car window lost in thought.
It was 12:30 on Monday, Ade’s mind was on the Danico project his Architectural firm had been contracted to do, however there was a part of the contract that didn’t favour his company. They had to work with an interior decorating firm chosen by their client. His company usually handled this aspect of the job, apart from the building construction and so on, but Mr. Danico his client was adamant on using Faswerdas services and was not ready to change his mind. The contract was worth 500 Million. He was willing to do anything to make his client happy even if it meant doing something he usually never does. But that wasn’t the current problem. In the last two weeks , after they had contacted Faswerdas and sent over the contracts for them to sign, there had never had a business meeting to discuss plans for the project. His secretary had been trying to get in touch with Chinedu the company’s M.D but to no avail. His insider David who was Frank’s cousin was also not returning his calls. David Bankole was Head logistics and development at Faswerdas.
Tola called his cellphone. “Hi darling, do you want to go out for lunch?” She was the last person he wanted to see or talk to right now but her bubbly attitude was a welcome surprise compared to her cold attitude of the last few days. They had not spoken to one another for about three days. “You seem happy; did you have a nice weekend? I am sorry I had to work this weekend and I could not go for that event you wanted me to go with you to. How was it? ” “Oh Ade It was wonderful! All our friends were there. I was not disappointed. It should really be the event of the year; I do not think any other event can top it: By the way the press was fascinated with my dress, the red Valentino dress you bought for me in Paris, do you remember it? “No I don’t Ade said.” “I have a lot of work to do so I can’t go out for lunch with you”. “You are speaking to me like I am wasting your time. Ade is your work is becoming more important than me? I have always accepted your work as your first girlfriend but these days all you do is work………. “You asked me to tell about my weekend, but you are not interested”. She kept quiet for a while and continued. “I know you were with her this weekend”. “With whom ?” Ade asked “Let me rephrase that, Tola said, I know you saw her this weekend. I know she was at Dayo and Frank’s barbeque”. Who is her”? Ade asked. “Don’t mention her name, I can’t stand her. What do you see in her Ade? What she can she give to you that I can’t give you? What does she have that I don’t have? You must not leave me for her. She dumped you, she doesn’t love you. She never loved you, I love you. Ade I love you.
“Tola, why are you talking this way? When did I say Gwen and I were getting back together, she is my past you are my present, why would such a thought even pop into your brain, you amaze me at times.” “I think that way because I know you Ade; since Gwen came back you don’t care about me anymore. Promise me no matter what might happen you will never leave me and go back to her”. Tola was waiting for an answer; he knew he should say something, say what she wanted him to say but ….. Suddenly his office intercom rang; grateful for the interruption Ade quickly said to Tola, “I‘ll call you back, I have business matters to attend to right now, you have nothing to be worried about”. “Ok, I love you. Bye. Tola said. “Me too” Ade replied. Then he answered the call. “Sir his secretary said you have a call on line 2, its David Bankole from Faswerdas co. Ade picked up his call, “Hello David we have not heard from your office for two weeks, we need to sit down to discuss plans for the Danico project, time is being wasted and this is not professional at all. “That is exactly the reason I called Ade, we are withdrawing from the project. Management has decided not to take up the Danico project anymore. “David stop right there, Mr. Danico wants us to work together on the museum of art’s project, our company can just as well provide the interior services, but Mr. Danico specifically asked that Faswerdas do the interiors or he would take the project from us” .
“Ade it is out of my hands, and moreover we signed no contract binding us to anything. I am sorry; Gwen decided to cancel the project for her reasons. Personally I would love for Faswerdas to be involved in this project, but at the same time the decision is in Gwen’s hands…….. Gwen? Who is Gwen? Ade asked? “Gwen is the owner /CEO Faswerdas. “David replied. “What about Chinedu”? Ade asked. Chinedu is the managing director, Gwen owns the company, and I am surprised you don’t know this Ade. ; Anyway she is the one who ultimately makes all the decisions. I have got to go I just felt that you deserve an explanation, which is why I called. “Thank you for letting me know” Ade said. Goodbye”, David said and the line went dead.
It was all making sense to him now, the delay of Faswerdas, no response from them and Gwen being the CEO. He was proud of her for making a name for her herself, Faswerdas was doing well, it wasn’t as good as his company but they were one of the best in their field. How come he didn’t know she was the CEO? At the same time he was annoyed that she had cancelled her company’s involvement in the project. Who did she think she was? It was his project! She couldn’t just decide she did not want to be involved in the project again without giving him good reasons. She should know that she can’t just withdraw from a commitment she has made without explanation, whether she like it or not, the Danico project was going on.
He called his Secretary on the phone, “put me through to Faswerdas I want to speak to Gwen”. After several fruitless attempts by his secretary to contact Gwen to speak to him, who had been told that Gwen was not receiving any calls? Ade decided to try her cell phone number. He had saved the other night when she called him. He dialed her number, fortunately she picked “Hello” Gwen said. “How dare you Gwen, he was shouting into his phone, he could not help it, he was very angry. “How dare you think you can cancel our contract like that without informing me before hand? Gwen replied “Ade what makes you think that it is ok for you to speak to me like this”? “I tried several times to get in touch with you to no avail, so that we could settle our differences before we started doing business together, I have decided that my company is not going to do business with you and this is my final decision. If you have nothing else important to say I have to go, I do not have time for this, I have a meeting in 10mins ,Goodbye” and she cut the call. Ade tried calling back but her phone was switched off. He was Ade Johnson, none of his business partners had ever defiled him, this kind of thing had never happened. She did not have a choice in this matter; business is business. He was going to remind Gwen who she was dealing with.
Gwen was stepping into her office just back from lunch, when her cell phone rang; she had picked it without checking the caller ID. If she had seen it was Ade’s number she wouldn’t have picked the call, what a waste of time.Just then Fola walked into her office. “Hi Gwen” She and Fola had been hanging out since she got back to the country. Fola usually came to her house and occasionally to her office so her secretary was familiar with her and always let her in. But she hadn’t expected to see her today. It was such a coincidence that Fola came in just after Ade had called her. “Hello dear, how has your day been?”
“My day has been fine so far, she went around Gwen’s office table gave her a hug. I went shopping and both a lot of things. I bought you a pair of shoes”. “Here this is for you”. Fola handed over the package she had for Gwen. “How thoughtful of you Fola, thank you”, fola smiled and went to sit down on the couch that was in the corner of Gwen’s office.
“Gwen you have also bought me so many things in the past, you are like a sister to me, the older sister I have always wanted”. “I feel the same way too” Gwen said. Gwen picked her office and called her secretary “Cynthia I don’t want to be disturbed, I will not be receiving any calls or visitors at the moment”.
Gwen then left her seat and went to join Fola on the couch. “Thank you for the shoes, I also see you as a sister and good friend too. I am glad our friendship has lasted this long after your brother and I broke up. “Me too Gwen, and speaking of my brother, have the both of you managed to get together to talk? Ade doesn’t like to talk about you and neither do you want to talk about him, so I don’t really know what is going on.
“Fola it’s important that you listen carefully to what I am about to tell you…….. No matter how much you want us to, Ade and I are never going to get back together, and I don’t want to discuss this issue with you again” Gwen said. “Gwen I know in my heart that you two still love each other and there is something…… “Fola what did I just say? Gwen cut her in midsentence” “Gwen please hear me out……I am trying to say something very important here, something I have never told you before that may change things….. “ I found out that the reason you broke up with Ade was because tola told you she was pregnant with Ade’s child? Is this true? Reluctantly Gwen nodded yes in response to her. “Gwen, tola was never pregnant for Ade back then, her pregnancy story was a ploy she and my mother made up so you and Ade could break up.
“That is impossible, Fola I saw the tests myself, and moreover I always used to meet her at Ade’s house when we were dating. He was cheating on me with her when we were engaged. Don’t you see that he didn’t hesitate to start dating her after we broke up? Fola replied “Gwen do you not know that most people have a price? It’s very easy to pay someone to get a fake medical report; these are the benefits of having money and power. Didn’t it ever cross your mind that Tola might have been lying? As for the fact that my brother is now engaged to Tola, they have been friends since they were young, Tola’s family and ours are close; he is only doing what my parents have wanted him to do for a long time, which is to get married to tola. ”. “This is a lot to digest. If what you are saying is true Fola, it means we broke up for nothing. Ade would never forgive me for not trusting him, nothing would still change” Gwen said. Fola held Gwen while she said her next words “something would change, the truth would be revealed. Also my brother will want nothing to do with Tola once he finds out” there was a short pause and she continued “I see you and no one else as my sister-in-law Gwen; I can assure you that beneath all his indifference my brother still loves you and I know you feel the same way; Please think about what I have told you”. “Now on a lighter note, Fola said quickly changing the topic “did I tell you that I am going to be on the cover of GLAM Magazine, the photo shoot is next week”? “No you didn’t “Gwen replied. Fola kept on chatting about her cover spread, but Gwen’s mind was far away.
To be continued ……..
The phone kept ringing. Ade pressed the ignore button and switched off the phone. He was not interested in anything thing she had to say.He checked the time, 3:05 am ,whatever little sleep he thought he was going to get had suddenly disappeared ,maybe he should try to get some work down. He got off from the bed and went down downstairs .
Somewhere else, two people were having a conversation on the phone. “she is back ,and she wants to see him, we cannot let that happen ,they can’t find out anything. We must prevent them from seeing each other. The voice on the end replied “We”? There is no we.
They started arguing, threats were made. One of them did not want to talk again and decided to end the conversation and said “let me make it perfectly clear Tola, even if you try to blackmail me I am not helping you again and the call was disconnected.”
It was after eleven o’clock Tuesday night when Gwen walked into her house. She’d spent a long day in the office. She needed to find something to occupy her mind, but after realizing she’d spent nearly two hours staring out the window, thinking of nothing but Ade and the fact she had not been able to reach him. It had been two weeks since she tried to call Ade. It seemed like he was avoiding her. But she needed to speak to him. If they to work together they needed to clear some things and put the past behind them even though it would not be easy for her, she didn’t know how she would act if she saw him..
Her house was cool, quiet, lifeless. She picked up the wedding invitation of her friend Dayo. Everyone managed to fall in love and get married but her? She had met Dayo through Ade . Dayo’s fiancé Frank were roommates in university. The four of them used to go on double dates in the past. She had not kept in touch with Dayo when she left the country, they had run into each other at the Spa when she went for her weekly appointment. It had been a nice reunion, they had talked, but consciously avoided talking about Ade. They exchanged numbers and Dayo invited her for a Barbeque party at Frank’s house ,“it’s just a small party, Just a few friends nothing elaborate” she had said. The barbeque was tomorrow what was she going to wear? Was Ade going to be there? Sigh . She would just have to wait until tomorrow.
The barbeque was more like a couples get-together , she had met two couples there, plus Dayo and Frank and her altogether there were seven people at the party. They were sitting outside at the back of the house and getting to know each other. Everyone was very nice and friendly, but she felt alone, she was the only single person here. Although Dayo said she was expecting one more guest. She decided to go into the kitchen to get ice water. When she got in she noticed Frank was talking to someone, a man but he had his back to her so she could not see his face. She had worked passed them when she heard the voice. She turned back to see it was Ade. Ade had stopped talking with Frank and was looking at her.She just stood there. So many questions rushed through her mind, what was he doing here? Did Frank and Dayo plan this, what was she going to say? She didn’t like being caught off guard. How was she going to control her emotions. Why today of all days did she have to see him?
I think I will leave you two to talk frank said and walked out of the kitchen. Ade walked out of the kitchen, she quickly followed him “Ade wait” she said. He walked past the dining area into the sitting room and stopped and turned. “What do you want”? He asked.
The room was quiet as they stared at each other as if waiting for something to happen. Gwen broke the silence, “I have been wanting to talk to you, I have left messages with your P.A and tried calling you several times . Are you avoiding me?
Ade replied ,”why would I be avoiding u? I have just been busy. How are you? You look great, you are much slimmer than the last time I saw you .Are not over working yourself? “No I am not. Your concern is sweet,” she said. “Misplaced, but sweet. I need to speak to you about a business proposal. I did not want awkward situation when we met in a business meeting so I decide to talk to you first. but this not the time and place to rally discuss it, we need to set an appointment so we can talk. “We have nothing to talk about Gwen, I doubt we can do business together”. He stood up to leave.
“How is Tola? She blurted out . She knew his life and what he did with it was none of her business but she could not help herself. She kept on talking.“I heard you guys are together now. Are you going to get married to her? Do you plan to spend the rest of your life with her like you planned with me?
“Well, you ruined those plans, didn’t you? Are you here to ruin my life some more Gwen? Why are we having this conversation? I don’t have time to discuss this “You have no right to ask about my life or even care.” Why?” she asked, in disbelief. Of course I care about you. We were friends before we became a couple. I care a lot about you. I thought we could still be friends.“You’ve never cared about anyone, except yourself Gwen, you and I can never be friends again.” He turn and walked away.
Why are you treating me like this Ade? What did I do to you? He turned to look at her the hurt was evident in her eyes ,he walked back towards her ,when he got to her he forced her to look up at him, holding her shoulders so she couldn’t look away. “How did you expect me to react after seeing you after such a long time. You left me to marry someone else and you were pregnant for him. Gwen looked at him like she had just heard the most shocking news that she had ever heard in her life.
Ade what are you saying??? I have never been married or pregnant in my life. When I got to the states I started to work for Joe. We were together, he wanted to marry me, I just could bring myself to fall in love with him and we spent a lot of time apart because of work, so I broke things off .Gwen told him she and Joe had decided a year after they started dating that they had grown apart. For the entire time that she had been living in the states, she had studiously avoided romantic entanglements. Her relationship with Joe had been exceedingly complicated near the end. She was enjoying the simple life.
This is unbelievable, so you are not married ? So why did we break up ? Why did you break up with me? Gwen looked at him and said, “Did you think you could fool me, do not even try to deny it ,I know all about the child I saw the pregnancy test”. “What child ?”Ade asked confusion written all over I know about the child you had with Tola ,did you really think I would marry you after you cheated on me and me knowing that you were having a child with another woman?
What? !!! Ade exclaimed.
To be continued …………………………………………….
Checking his Swiss Watch for the third time, Ade impatiently drummed his fingers annoyingly on the table of Fashbelle’s restaurant. On Friday night, the restaurant in Adeola Odekun Victoria Island was packed. He’d made reservations a week ago for Tola’s birthday a week ago.It was very difficult making reservations in this Resturant especially on a friday night, but being the son of the third richest man in the country had its advantages. Ade had paid for a whole section of the Restaurant so they would not be disturbed. She was almost an hour late. His cell phone rang. “Where are you!” he answered with a growl. There was so much noise in the background, she yelled back, “I am still in Festac and I am stuck in traffic, I can’t make it.
He replied “Tola if this is a joke you need to stop it right now. I have been waiting for you for close to an hour ,You know how much effort I put into making this night special for you . “Well I am sorry I can’t make it,I might be stuck here all night” she said , and I would be too tired for anything else by the time I get there. Call me later ,and she hung up before he could get a word in edgewise and even wish her happy birthday once more.
Tola had been acting differently ever since she found out that Gwen was back in the country.Gwen had tried to get in contact with him through his sister Fola. Well he won’t blame her if he was in her shoes he probably react worse than she was behaving. Gwen had been the love of his life.
He paid for the meal he had ordered while waiting and left the Restaurant. On the drive home the question that had been on his mind the past few days was why Gwen wanted to see him. There was definitely no room for a Reconciliation. So was it to apologise?Well she could keep her apology to herself. He was still very angry at her. She was the one who had broken off their relationship, to say he had been brokenhearted would be an understatement,he had been shattered. She was the only woman he had ever loved and she had made a fool out of him. It had come from nowhere and she had said that she had stopped loving him. Where did all her love go? The best thing was him avoiding her,and Gwen leaving him alone and returning back to the states and everyone getting on with their lives. Their break up had been four years ago,he had not seen or spoken to her since then,it was too late to apologise.
He got home within 45minutes,he lived in ikoyi in an expansive estate in the Mansion he had designed himself. He was an Architect by Profession although he did not pratice because he ran one his father’s companies. It was what was expected of him. He had always wanted to design the house he would get married and have kids in. When he and Gwen were still together, he always thought they would live here together. She had even said she would do the interior decorating since that was that what she was into.
He switched off the house alarm got into the house and switched it back on.Apart from the servants, and drivers,He lived by himself. This house was really too large for just one person, but thanks to his cousin Maria and sister Fola who preferred living with him than with their parents in their family house, he didn’t feel lonely at times. However they were in the states now having fun in Maimi and he was alone.
He undressed and took a shower and got ready to sleep, then remembered he had to call Tola .She had totally escaped his mind. He decided to call her but her number was busy. He decided to wait a while and called again,it was still engaged. “who could she be speaking to at this time”? He thought .After trying several times he gave up and decided to go sleep. But sleep eluded him. He was still thinking about Gwen.
They had met in an Art gallery in Abuja. She was among the few people that came to see the Artist’s exhibition that day. However he had brought a date that day, a lady he was seeing then, but didn’t plan on having anything serious with. She had been bored .She couldn’t understand why anyone would be interested in art or even think of buying it.She felt it was a waste of money. After they had seen about three paintings, she had excused herself to go to the ladies.
Gwen had been studing a particular painting. From behind she had a very nice figure, he didn’t give the lady much thought until she turned to her side to face him when he stood by her side also trying to view the painting she had been looking at. Wow! Yes Wow was the word that came to his mind when he saw her, she was beautiful! She said hello, smiled and turned back to keep looking at the painting on wall, lost in thought as if the painting were silently speaking to her. It was the smile that got him, she had the most beautiful smile he had ever seen.
He turned to look at the painting but his mind really on the lady by his side. Then she walked off, just like that without a second glance, he wanted to go after her but just then his date found him.
It was when he decided to try to buy the particular painting they had been looking at, he ran into her again, she was with another lady and they wanted to buy the painting or so it seemed.
As it turned out Gwen knew the Artist, they were very good friends. Roy the Artist was equally a very good friend of Ade,so he used the opportunity to get more information about Gwen.
It turned out that Roy and Gwen were childhood friends and they saw each other as siblings because she had practically grown up with Roy and his siblings, when she lost her father at the age of six in a plane crash and her mother who had been a housewife had to bring Gwen and her younger brother up.
After the exhibition he found out that he couldn’t get Gwen out of his mind.He wanted to ask Roy for her number, but he didn’t know if she was single or had a boyfriend or was even married.A lady as beautiful as that had to be taken. They met again at a party organised by mutual friends.she had been the one who walked up to say Hello. Hi, do you remember me Roy’s friend we met at an Art Exhibition? Yes I do “Ade replied. They sat together through out the event and chatted like long time friends. After the party, they exchanged contacts and started calling her.First they became friends and within the next six months were an item. They liked the same things, they both liked Art,they had the same taste in music and could talk to each other about anything. They were together for three years. There was a guy called Joe who had always been intrested in Gwen. She had never paid him any attention, she said she just saw him as a friend.Joe was also an Architect and owned a very successful Architectural firm.Joe was still after Gwen even when she told him she was getting married to Ade. Joe had wanted her to work for him but Ade refused because he couldn’t stand the idea.He really disliked Joe but he never felt threatened by Joe when it came to Gwen’s love for him but he did not want Joe around her. When they were together, he was the happiest man on earth. His friends liked her,and they envied him.His sisters Fola and Jennifer, accepted her, she had a warm personality and was friendly not forgetting very Beautiful.Fola and Gwen clicked from day one, they became good friends.
The only people that did not accept her were his parents. His father was outraged ,”Ade you know I have always wanted you to get married to Tola Afolabi. Her father and I have always talked of your union since you were kids. And you know Tola loves you! This girl you want to marry ,where is she from? Who is her father? Does she know who you are? How do know she is not a Golddigger? I will only give my blessing if its Tola you marry.
His mother did not help matters either, she was never warm to Gwen, she also loved to use any opportunity to bring Tola’s name up especially in the presence of Gwen or invite Tola to any family gathering or party they had.
It also didn’t help that Tola liked to come to his house uninvited and Gwen had met her at his place several times with Tola always making her departure very dramatic and suspicious.Tola was very jealous of Gwen and always didn’t miss the opportunity to say something nasty or disturbing to Gwen. Gwen had been worried, but she would always tell him that she trusted him but she didn’t trust Tola.
At that time, Gwen had been working as an Event planner but wanted to start her own business as an Interior decorator but didn’t have start up capital. He had offered to give her the money several times but she had refused. She would always smile and say that she didn’t want any one to call her a Golddigger.
She always said she could never love anyone the way she loved Ade. But all that love dissappeared .She had dumped him and left the country with Joe.He later found out that she had been pregnant for Joe.
A loud sound broke through his line of thought and he discovered it was his cell phone ringing. The time said 3am. Who could be calling at this time?there was no name on the caller ID which was strange because only family and very close friends had this number, and he had everyone’s number stored on his phone,he didn’t want to pick but had an afterthought that could bean an Emergency. Ade picked up the phone “Hello. A female voice came on,”Ade”,he was chilled to the bone.He knew that voice anywhere,It was Gwen.He cut the call. Five seconds later his phone rang again,he stared at his phone trying to decide if he should pick the call. Should he pick the call?
To be continued………….
(i didn’t write this, its just a story i decided to share)
I was a very happy man.
My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year.
So we decided to get married.
There was only one little thing bothering me.
It was her beautiful younger sister, Sofia.
My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very tight mini
skirts, and generally was Bra-less.
She would regularly bend down when she was near me.
I always got more than a nice view.
It had to be deliberate.
She never did it around anyone else.
One day she called me and asked me to come over.
‘To check my Sister’s wedding- invitations’ she said.
She was alone when I arrived.
She whispered to me that she had feelings and desires for me.
She couldn’t overcome them anymore.
She told me that she wanted me just once before I got married.
She said “Before you commit your life to my sister”.
Well, I was in total shock, and I couldn’t say a word.
She said, “I’m going upstairs to my bedroom” she said.
“If you want one last wild fling, just come up and have me”.
I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs.
I stood there for a moment.
Then turned and made a bee-line straight to the front door.
I opened the door, and headed straight towards my car.
Lord And behold, my entire future family was standing outside, all clapping!
With tears in his eyes, my father-in-law hugged me.
He said, ‘Sergio, we are very happy that you have passed our little test.
We couldn’t ask for a better man for our daughter.
Welcome to the family my son..’
Guess what? I was heading towards my car to pick my condom. Have a lovely day people and always think twice b4 taking decisions!
