Elle magazine (US) did a review of the just concluded GTB Fashion and Design Week in Lagos Nigeria .

I guessed it shocked some people that such good work (the clothes, models and the shows) could come out of Africa. Someone actually left a comment on one of the posts on my blog about the GTB fashion week complementing Nigerian girls and asking if I photoshopped my photos because she felt the photos I posted weren’t the same as what she was used to seeing on TV.

There was also a Controversial tweet that was made public by bloggers from a Scottish drag queen, Guillotina asking if we have clothes in Lagos. What do people really take Africans for?!

A lot Nigerians didn’t take that tweet likely and gave “him” a piece of their mind on twitter. He later apologised, but honestly that was a big insult to Nigerians. Of course we wear clothes! What kind of question was that? I have a few things to tell him and every other ignorant person out there and I am basing my points on questions I have heard people ask and say over time :

1) Africa is not a Country, its a continent like Europe, and Asia with over 50 Countries of which Nigeria is one of the Countries in the Western part of Africa

2)Don’t believe everything you see in the Media. Yes there is Poverty in Africa, but there is also poverty every where else in the world. The Media usually likes to focus the poorest people and the Poorest countries ,the wars and really negative things happening in Africa.

3)People live in houses, wear clothes and live normal lives in Africa. There are some people that “choose” to live without Modern facilities and there are some who are not rich enough to afford some things but that doesn’t mean there is no technological advancement in Africa.

4) Please get familiar with Google and get more knowledge about other places and countries in the world other than your country.

  1. He sounds like an idiot. It’s is kind of like when tourists come to Ireland and they expect Ireland to be like it is portrayed on television. They are so surprised that we are not all rolling around drunk all day and night, but there is a whole other side of Ireland that nobody ever hears about.

If I ever had the time and money (mostly money) I would love to visit Nigeria and experience a different country and culture.

Stereotyping is the problem. The minds of these generation have been brainwashed to believe that people in Africa are poor. They never see celebrities travelling to Countries Russia and other parts of Europe where there is also extreme poverty to build schools etc,its always Africa .
Americans have also played a huge part in all kinds of stereotyping. An average American thinks every oriental is chinese.
Also Many don’t know that India or Isreal or the Middle East is in Asia. C’mon Indians are Asians,we are Asians. The only people they think are Asians are the Chinese,Japanese ,you know those persons that look like that. I could go on and on,but what’s the point? Thank you for taking a stand to clear some misconceptions .

Sadly, the way the world is set up has people believing a lie and it conveniently keeps one so far from the
truth. People believe that because it’s on CNN,or whatever news channel it’s has to be true and that is not necessarily the case.

  5. Its pure ignorance, IMO. If people decide to just stop focusing on themselves and their immediate surroundings, they can start to appreciate the world we live in, and realise just how much they don’t know. As an Indian, I know how you feel, people stereotype India and Indians so much. When I tell someone I’m going bakc home for a week, they tell me to stay safe and keep away from rapists. Can you believe that?!

  6. This may be totally unrelated, but it gets my goat the way some people lump Africa together as 1 country as oppose to 1 continent. I have a Polish friend at work and after her continuously asking me when I was going to Africa for Crimbo, I had to sit her down and go, ‘Hon, I’m going to Nigeria…’ and then I went on to explain…

    • Audrina says:

Trust me its not unrelated,we are basically on the same page. Some people actually think Africa is a country. Its sad. Not for Africans but for them, considering the Ignorance. Its basic knowledge that there a 7 continents in the world,Africa,Asia,North America,SouthAmerica,Europe,Australia(which also doubles as a country),and Antarctica. How someone will think and say Africa is a country still baffles me till this day.

Also all the celebrities that come to do charity work in Africa go to the poorest places, and only get to meet the poor people and the media covers this wonderfully making it seem like all the countries in Africa are living in gross poverty.

African Americans annoy me the most with their comments on Africa,of all the Africans living outside Africa they are the ones that say the most ignorant and annoying things.

Is he mad? What makes him think tweeting that stupid tweet is ok? It’s one thing to be disrespectful behind closed doors and clearly another thing when its done in public.
