A cracked Chinese vase that was delivered by its elderly owner to an auction house in a battered cardboard box has sold for almost £120,000.
The owner a male aged in his 80s, had inherited the 11 in moon flask vase from a relative many years ago and thought it was of little value because of the damage it had suffered.
Despite cracks and seven staples on the vase , Chinese collectors bid on the blue and white vase at Duke’s auctioneers of Dorchester, Dorset, believing if was a rare relic from the Ming dynasty. It was finally bought for £119,500,but would have fetched £1m without the huge crack on its neck.
It is speculated that the vase sold that high because of the six-character reign mark of Emperor Xuande from the Ming dynasty on the neck of the vase.
The Chinese Emperor Xuande was China’s fifth Emperor in the Ming dynasty.
As an artist himself, he produced many illustrated manuscripts and scroll paintings and appreciated the production of fine porcelain and paintings within his courts.
The Xuande period of blue and white porcelain production is seen by many as the pinnacle of blue and white decoration in China, showing the influence of Islamic designs.
