Today Wednesday Charles G. Taylor, the former president of Liberia and a once-powerful warlord, was sentenced to 50 years in prison over his role in atrocities committed in Sierra Leone during its civil war in the 1990s. This means that 64-year-old Mr. Taylor will spend the rest of his life behind bars. (Which is such good News) .IT MAY TAKE A LONG TIME BUT JUSTICE WILL ALWAYS PREVAIL
Charles G. Taylor crimes include murder, rape, the use of child soldiers, the mutilation of thousands of civilians, and the mining of diamonds to pay for guns and ammunition.
The presiding judge, Richard Lussick said in a statement read before the court in the international criminal court near The Hague :
“Mr. Taylor had been found guilty of “aiding and abetting, as well as planning, some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history” .
“Leadership must be carried out by example by the prosecution of crimes, not the commission of crimes,” ,
The Judge is right. This is just the beginning of Justice for all the past African Leaders and even Foreign leaders who have caused the death of others and have brought shame and pain to the citizens of their countries. I may not be a Liberian, but today i celebrate with them . One down, more to go.
